HC Deb 17 March 1927 vol 203 cc2197-8
76. Mr. CHARLETON

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that the use of stocks is still continued by the Government of Burma for the purpose of the confinement of arrested persons; and whether he will give instructions to have this method of confining persons done away with?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Earl Winterton)

The use of stocks as a means, not of punishment, but of detention of violent criminals prevails to some extent in Burma. The local Government have already appointed a Committee which will consider the matter as part of its inquiries, and it is not proposed to issue any instructions regarding it.
