HC Deb 14 March 1927 vol 203 cc1644-5
75. Colonel DAY

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will consider the appointment of a Committee of this House with a view to inquiry being made into the whole working of the Theatrical Employers' Registration Act?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Captain Hacking)

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer which was given to him on the 28th February. My right hon. Friend can find no reason at present for the appointment of a Committee.

Colonel DAY

Can the Under-Secretary say how long this Act is going to be worked in this unsatisfactory manner before something is done?

Captain HACKING

It has certainly not been working long enough yet for us to form an opinion.

Mr. CAMPBELL

Is the hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that it has been working for over a year, and that there is great dissatisfaction felt throughout the country?

Captain CROOKSHANK

Have there been any objections to the working of this Act?

Captain HACKING

Objections are raised to the working of any Act.

Colonel DAY

Is the hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that complaints have been received from the London County Council, who have to administer this Act, that it is impossible to work it?

Captain HACKING

There is another question on the Paper on that matter.

Commander WILLIAMS

Can the hon. and gallant Gentleman say whether there have been any results from this Act?.

Captain HACKING

Yes, Sir, some.
