HC Deb 21 June 1927 vol 207 c1669
55. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total value of the goods subject to duties under the Safeguarding of Industries Act and the McKenna Duties imported during the first five months of 1927?

Mr. McNEILL

The total declared value of the goods subject to safeguarding duties under the Safeguarding of Industries Act, 1921, and subsequent enactments, imported during the first five months of 1927 was £3,900,252, and the total declared value of the goods subject to McKenna Duties imported during the same period was £5,690,427.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Does not this show that there is not much protection to British manufacturers in these trades?

Mr. McNEILL

The hon. and gallant Member can, of course, draw his own inference.
