HC Deb 14 June 1927 vol 207 cc823-4
13. Sir A. SINCLAIR

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether the applicants for Rhifail Farm are being settled this Whitsunday?

Major ELLIOT

Negotiations for the settlement of holders on this farm are proceeding, but the views of the proprietor as to the individual applicants have not yet been communicated to the Board and it is doubtful whether arrangements for settlement with entry as from Whitsunday, 1927, can now he made in time to suit the convenience of applicants who may have entered into other commitments for this year.

Sir A. SINCLAIR

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that this matter has been running on now for six or seven years and that in recent months assurances have been given—conditional,I admit, but fairly definite assurances—that strong efforts will be made to get these men in by Whitsunday this year. Surely the right hon. Gentleman will make every effort to see that they are got in.

Major ELLIOT

My right hon. Friend makes the utmost efforts to expedite these matters, but it shows the great difficulty connected with any interference by the State in matters of land tenure.

Mr. KIRKWOOD

Well, nationalise the land.
