HC Deb 01 June 1927 vol 207 cc371-2
33. Mr. C. EDWARDS

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that in certain districts officials under the Employment Exchanges are engaged to go round to the houses to ascertain whether the unemployed persons have left home to look for work; whether this is in accordance with his instructions; whether public money is being spent for this purpose; and will he take steps to put an end to this practice?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

Inquiries of this kind may be made at the request of the Rota Committee or otherwise if the circumstances appear to call for investigation. The cost is charged to the Unemployment Fund. I cannot agree that any investigations necessary for safeguarding the Fund should be prohibited.

Mr. BARKER

Is the Minister going to introduce a system of spying on the households of the people?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

No, Sir.
