HC Deb 01 June 1927 vol 207 c368
25. Mr. BECKETT

asked the Minister of Labour how many claimants for unemployment insurance benefit have been refused since 1st January, 1925, on the grounds that they are not genuinely seeking employment?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

Between 1st January, 1925, and 25th May, 1927, 316,261 claims were disallowed by the chief insurance officer on this ground. In 48,222 of these cases the disallowances were removed on appeal to the Court of Referees.

In addition 720,254 applications for extended benefit were disallowed by local employment committees on the ground that the applicants were not making every reasonable effort to obtain employment suited to their capacities or were not willing to accept such employment.

The number of separate individuals concerned is not known but is certainly much less than the total number of cases.
