HC Deb 01 June 1927 vol 207 cc369-71
27. Mr. BUCHANAN

asked the Minister of Labour the number of persons during the past year who have applied for extended benefit in the city of Glasgow, the number refused, and the number of male and female persons affected?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

As the reply includes a number of figures, I will, with the hon. Member's permission, circulate a statement in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the statement:

Applications for extended benefit in the Glasgow area in the 12 months ended 9th May. 1927.
Males. Females. Total.
Applications:
Considered 205,094 34,487 239,581
Allowed 173,133 24,156 197,289
Disallowed 31,961 10,331 42,292

Statistics of the number of separate individuals represented by these figures are not available.

28. Mr. BUCHANAN

asked the Minister of Labour the number of persons who have applied for standard benefit in Glasgow during the past year and the number refused, and the number who have appeared before the court of referees and the number refused; and how many male and female persons were affected?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

I regret that statistics giving the information desired are not available.

Mr. BUCHANAN

In view of the importance of having all the facts when we are discussing this subject in the House, ought we not to know the number of applications for benefit and the refusals?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

I am not sure how far it would bear upon that discussion, but so far as it is possible with out an undue amount of trouble to compile statistics for which the data are, perhaps, not easily available I will gladly afford the hon. Member and any one in the House all the information I can conveniently give which bears on the discussion.

Mr. BUCHANAN

In certain circles vitally interested in the Blanesburgh Report and unemployment insurance, the refusal of standard benefit has already been the subject of hot debate, and in view of that will the right hon. Gentleman not take action?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

I cannot promise off hand, but I will consider it and see.
