asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what are the total sums that have been spent on land drainage in Scotland by the State and by private individuals assisted by the State, respectively, in each year since 1919?

As the reply involves a number of figures, I propose, with the hon. and gallant Member's permission, to circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the reply:

No schemes for the assistance of land drainage were financed out of State funds in 1919 and 1920. The information for the succeeding years is as follows:

The schemes for the Years 1922–23, 1923–24 and 1924–25 included assistance for farm roads and water supplies, and the figures given are inclusive of expenditure for such purposes, the amount of which was relatively inconsiderable.
