§ 17. Major GLYNasked the Financial Secretary to the War Office what is the sum paid on War Office account for meat, eggs, and dairy produce annually; and what proportion of such produce comes from foreign countries through the medium of British firms?
§ Commodore KINGThe only figures readily available are for War Office Headquarter purchases, and (in the case of meat) Home Command contracts. For the three years 1924–26, the average annual payments, including those for the requirements of the Air Ministry and of the Admiralty for the Mediterranean, totalled about £1, 030, 000, and the average proportion of foreign produce is estimated at 12¾ per cent. of which more than two-thirds is accounted for by the purchase of American bacon.
