HC Deb 25 July 1927 vol 209 cc991-3

Order for Second Reading read.

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Sir William Joynson-Hicks)

I beg to move, "That the Bill be now read a Second time."

Mr. BUCHANAN

Surely we will get a little information from the right hon. Gentleman in regard to this Bill.

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

It is a very simple Bill. Sometimes a difficulty arises in regard to the payment of workmen's compensation. In cases where the person concerned has emigrated, say, to Australia, there are no means of transferring the funds from this country to Australia. If, on the other hand, the person has obtained a compensation award in Australia or Canada and returns here, there are no means of enabling the money to be sent here from the Dominions. The matter was considered by the Imperial Conference this year, and they unanimously came to the conclusion that it was desirable that arrangements should be made to enable the funds to be transferred from one part of the Empire to another. This Bill gives effect to that Resolution.

Resolved, "That this House will immediately resolve itself into the Committee on the Bill."—[Sir W. Joynson Hicks.]

Bill accordingly considered in Committee.
