HC Deb 14 February 1927 vol 202 c541
21. Mr. CADOGAN

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how far, as the result of our agreement with Turkey, we have been able to reduce our military commitments in the Near East?

Mr. AMERY

It has been found possible, as the result of the agreement with Turkey, to effect considerable reductions of expenditure from the British Exchequer in the Middle East. A saving of some £200,000 has been effected during the current financial year. A further saving of over £1,000,000 is anticipated in the coming year.

Mr. J. H. THOMAS

Is that an actual saving, or is it a transfer from one account to another?

Mr. AMERY

Oh, no, that is an actual saving.
