HC Deb 26 April 1927 vol 205 cc657-8
31. Mr. PETHICK-LAWRENCE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total amount of accrued interest paid on the £35,450,000 national savings certificates redeemed in the year ending 31st March, 1927?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The interest paid in the year was £12,279,000.

32. Mr. PETHICK-LAWRENCE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the estimated total amount of interest accrued at 31st March, 1927, on the £372,000,000 savings certificates outstanding at that date; and what will be the additional accrued interest on these certificates on the 31st March, 1928, assuming that none have been paid off in the meanwhile?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The answer to the first part of the question is about £121 millions and to the hypothetical second part of the question about £24 millions.

Mr. H. WILLIAMS

Is there a reserve accumulating against these liabilities or are they a charge on future revenue?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I must have notice of that question.
