§ 16. Viscount SANDONasked the Secretary of State for War how many officers are employed in the remount service of the Army at Home; what is the total of pay and allowances under this head; whether any steps can be taken to reduce their number; and whether he can give any statistics or information as to the volume of work which passes through the hands of such an officer in a year?
§ Sir L. WORTHINGTON- EVANSThere are 78 officers of the Remount Service and their emoluments total approximately £27,000 a year. The numbers are continuously under review with a view to their possible reduction. As regards the last part of the question, it would hardly be possible in a reply to measure the volume of the diverse duties on which these officers are engaged.
§ Viscount SANDONWould not this be a very good moment to reconsider the whole question?
§ Sir L. WORTHINGTON- EVANSSome remount officers are necessary. Perhaps my hon. Friend does not know that they also engage in selecting civilians' horses, ear-marking civilian horses for possible use.
