HC Deb 12 April 1927 vol 205 c173
16. Viscount SANDON

asked the Secretary of State for War how many officers are employed in the remount service of the Army at Home; what is the total of pay and allowances under this head; whether any steps can be taken to reduce their number; and whether he can give any statistics or information as to the volume of work which passes through the hands of such an officer in a year?

Sir L. WORTHINGTON- EVANS

There are 78 officers of the Remount Service and their emoluments total approximately £27,000 a year. The numbers are continuously under review with a view to their possible reduction. As regards the last part of the question, it would hardly be possible in a reply to measure the volume of the diverse duties on which these officers are engaged.

Viscount SANDON

Would not this be a very good moment to reconsider the whole question?

Sir L. WORTHINGTON- EVANS

Some remount officers are necessary. Perhaps my hon. Friend does not know that they also engage in selecting civilians' horses, ear-marking civilian horses for possible use.
