HC Deb 07 April 1927 vol 204 cc2239-40
12. Mr. E. BROWN

asked the Home Secretary the number of persons convicted under the Emergency Powers Act and Regulations during the general strike and since that time in consequence of the strike; and the charges under which the persons concerned were prosecuted?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

The total number of persons convicted under the Emergency Regulations was 2,228. This number was made up as follows: Convicted under Regulation 20, 556 persons; Regulation 21, 1,184 persons; Regulation 28, 71 persons; other Regulations, 56 persons; Coal (Emergency) Directions (Regulation 14), 361 persons. I cannot state the individual charges more closely.

Mr. SHEPHERD

Can the right hon. Gentleman say how many people are still in prison under these Regulations?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

I cannot carry the figures in my head, but if the hon. Member will put down a question, I can quite easily give him an answer.
