HC Deb 07 April 1927 vol 204 cc2273-4
91. Mr. BECKETT

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the number of British subjects resident in Peking; whether they are considered by the Government to be in danger; and, if so, what steps are being taken for their protection?

Mr. G. LOCKER-LAMPSON

I have no precise information as to the number of British subjects resident in Peking, but the question of their safety is one of the many problems created by existing conditions in China which have been engaging the anxious attention of His Majesty's Government.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Is it expected that they will be able to take refuge, with safety, in the Legation, if necessary?

Mr. LOCKER-LAMPSON

I am afraid that I cannot add anything to the statement I have made.

Mr. BECKETT

Will the hon. Gentleman answer my question?

Mr. LOCKER-LAMPSON

I am afraid I cannot add anything to the statement I have made.

Mr. H. WILLIAMS

Can the hon. Member tell us what is the permanent strength of the Legation guard?

Mr. LOCKER-LAMPSON

I cannot say, without notice.
