HC Deb 04 April 1927 vol 204 c1686
51. Mr. MACKINDER

asked the Minister of Labour whether his attention has been called to a statement made by the director of the International Labour Organisation, that in a large number of instances it has been possible to record that the reduction of hours from 10 to eight has not been followed by a decrease in output, while sometimes it has been followed by an increase in output; and whether he will bring this statement to the notice of the Cabinet Committee which is considering the question of the ratification of the Hours Convention?

Mr. BETTERTON

I assume the reference is to the reply given by the director to a question, which, with a series of other questions relating to the eight-hour day, was put to him and others by a French newspaper. The replies as published by the newspaper are summarised in the issue for 7th March last of "Industrial and Labour Information" issued by the International Labour Office, which. I have seen. The Cabinet Committee will have before them all relevant information on the point.
