§ 59. Mr. CADOGANasked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that it is proposed to erect garages in Prince's Square, Kennington; and whether he can take any steps to preserve this open space, situated in an overcrowded quarter of south cast London, for the enjoyment and recreation of the public?
§ Sir K. WOODMy right hon. Friend has no information as to any proposed building in this square, and no power to prevent it. I will, however,, bring my hon. Friend's question to the notice of the London County Council, who, I understand, are considering the general question of London squares.
§ Major CRAWFURDIs the hon. Gentleman aware that there is a Private Member's Bill before the House dealing with the matter, and can he say whether the Government will assist its passage into law?
§ Sir K. WOODThat is entirely another matter. In the first place, this rests with the London County Council.
§ Colonel DAYIs it not a fact that the local council have made an offer for this square, and has the hon. Gentleman any powers to refer the matter to arbitration,, so that the offer can be treated fairly?
§ Sir K. WOODNo, Sir, if the hon. Gentleman had listened to the first part of my reply, he would see we have no power.
Captain CROOKSHANKDoes not the hon. Gentleman think it time the Government took power to preserve these open spaces?
§ Sir K. WOODThe London County Council is now considering it.
