HC Deb 24 November 1926 vol 200 c412
74. Colonel WOODCOCK

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether any negotiations have been reopened by the Portuguese Government for the settlement of their War Debt to Great Britain; and whether he has any information to give concerning the attitude of Portugal to any offer made by His Majesty's Government?

Mr. SAMUEL

I am informed that the Portuguese Government intend to resume the negotiations for the settlement of the War Debt very shortly. At the present time I am unable to add anything to the reply given to my hon. Friend the Member for Ilford on the 11th November.

Colonel WOODCOCK

Can the hon. Member say what truth there is in the statement that an offer of £6,000,000 has been made to the Portuguese Government in complete satisfaction of the whole Debt, and whether the offer has been refused by the Portuguese Government?

Mr. SAMUEL

I have no intimation to that effect myself.
