HC Deb 09 November 1926 vol 199 cc858-9
13. Mr. R. MORRISON

asked the Secretary of State for War for what reason the revised conditions of service of Army schoolmistresses recently issued forbids Army schoolmistresses to marry a soldier below the rank of sergeant?

Sir L. WORTHINGTON-EVANS

An Army schoolmistress is not forbidden to marry a soldier below the rank of sergeant. If she marries she is liable to be compulsorily retired, but it has been customary not to enforce retirement if she marries a soldier of the rank of sergeant or over. This rule is not a new one; it is over 20 years old.
