HC Deb 09 November 1926 vol 199 cc865-6
34. Lieut.-Colonel ACLAND-TROYTE

asked the Minister of Transport how many borough councils have applied for grants under Circular 234, and how many have received grants; and whether he will state how he decides whether the area of a borough council is rural in character?

Colonel ASHLEY

Applications for grants tinder Circular No. 234 have been received from 56 borough councils in England and. Wales. Eleven of these boroughs have been accepted as eligible for grants under the scheme. The decision in each case is based upon a careful study of the general character and population of the locality.

Lieut.-Colonel ACLAND-TROYTE

Can the right hon. Gentleman inform us how he judges whether a borough council area is rural or not?

Colonel ASHLEY

I rather hesitate to give reasons for my decision, as some of them might be challenged, but, broadly speaking, our view is that the areas should be rural in character and the population not more than one to the acre.
