§ 26. Colonel DAYasked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of the fact that only 1.1 per cent. of the area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark is open space, and the population averages 14,500 persons to the acre of such open spaces, he will consider the possibility of closing certain streets in the area to vehicles on certain fixed days in order that children may have opportunities for uninterrupted play?
§ The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Colonel Ashley)I am advised that it would require legislation to enable the hon. Member's suggestion to be put into force, and, while the object he seeks to obtain, namely, additional facilities for children to play,' is one that has my sympathy, the practical difficulties of his proposal are too great.
