HC Deb 09 November 1926 vol 199 c874
49. Commander BELLAIRS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, with a view to preventing the growth of Government staffs, the Government will refuse to sanction any further large building schemes for Government accommodation?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Churchill)

The object desired by my hon. and gallant Friend would not necessarily be secured by the means which he suggests. Indeed a large building scheme may in certain circumstances be more economical than a number of small schemes or new hirings of premises. Each case has to be carefully considered on its merits.
