HC Deb 03 May 1926 vol 195 cc32-3
32. Captain GARRO-JONES

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is now at liberty to make public the general indication of the terms of the Franco Turkish Treaty, as communicated to him by the French Government?

Mr. LOCKER-LAMPSON

The position as regards this Treaty is still the same as on the 19th April, when I informed the hon. and gallant Member that its final text had not yet been settled. In these circumstances His Majesty's Government are not prepared to make public the information given to my right hon. Friend by the French Government regarding its general character.

Captain GARRO-JONES

May I ask whether the Under-Secretary will consider the advisability of representing to the French Government that this Treaty should conform to the Covenant of the League of Nations as was done in the case of the Russo-German Treaty?

Mr. LOCKER-LAMPSON

It is certainly not our business to convey such a message to the French Government.

Captain GARRO-JONES

Is it not a fact that the Government did consider it was its business to convey this representation to the German Government, and, if so, why not to the French Government? [HON. MEMBERS: "Answer!"]

Mr. LOCKER-LAMPSON

The text of this Treaty has not yet been settled, and perhaps the hon. and gallant Member will wait until the text of the Treaty has been settled?
