asked the President of the Board of Trade whether any Regulations govern the use of chemicals in the bleaching of flour; and, if not, will he consider what Regulations are necessary to restrict the use of such chemicals?

I have been asked to reply. The Bread Acts make it an offence to put into flour any ingredient or mixture not being the real and genuine produce of the corn or grain. My right hon. Friend is advised, however, that it is doubtful whether this provision would be held to prohibit the use of gases for bleaching purposes. A Departmental Committee is at present considering whether it is desirable in the interests of public health that the treatment of flour with chemical substances should be prohibited or restricted,
