HC Deb 16 March 1926 vol 193 cc249-50
72. Mr. TINKER

asked the Postmaster-General if he will give further consideration to the application from Tyldesley Urban District Council, representing 17,000 inhabitants, for the provision of. Government premises for the post office and the installation of a separate telephone exchange?

Sir W. MITCHELL-THOMSON

The provision of Crown premises for post office purposes at Tyldesley would involve a considerable increase in expenditure, which I should not feel justified in incurring. The telephone requirements can be more efficiently and economically met by a single exchange serving Tyldesley anti Atherton than by the installation of separate exchanges.

Mr. TINKER

Is the right. hon. Gentleman aware that in 1914 the Post master-General agreed to install a separate telephone, but owing to the War it was put off, and although the population has increased since that time, nothing has been done?

Sir W. MITCHELL-THOMSON

If the hon. Member will speak to um about the matter afterwards I think I can convince him that there is no injustice being done. There is only one exchange, it is true, for both Tyldesley and Atherton, but residents in Tyldesley have their mileage distances for rental purposes measured from there and not from Atherton.
