HC Deb 16 March 1926 vol 193 cc251-2
76. Dr. DRUMMOND SHIELS

asked the Minister of Pensions the grounds of refusal of pension in the case of reO. A. 5607, Captain R. A. Gunn, Alassio, Italy, in view of the strong outside expert medical evidence in support of his claim; and can he see his way to reconsider his decision?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of PENSIONS (Lieut.-Colonel Stanley)

This case has already been fully considered on its merits, and in the light of the medical evidence submitted, though this is far from being strong. I am advised, however, that. Captain Gunn's war service cannot be held responsible for his present condition.

Dr. SHIELS

May I ask the hon. and gallant Member whether in a case like this, where expert medical evidence suggests that the medical officers of the Ministry have been mistaken in their diagnosis, the Ministry always stands by its own medical officers, however high or expert the outside opinion may be?

Lieut.-Colonel STANLEY

We take into consideration everything that is brought before us. I do not know whether the hon. Member has seen the certificate in this case. If he had, I think he would have been hostile to the man rather than otherwise.
