HC Deb 16 March 1926 vol 193 cc224-5
12. Mr. DALTON

asked the Secretary-of State for War whether he is aware that on 1st of March last the adjutant of the 22nd London Armoured Car Company (Territorial) issued a circular letter to all A class men in the company informing them that he had hen asked by the private organisation styled the Organisation for the Maintenance of Supplies to appeal for volunteers to drive lorries in the event of an industrial stoppage, and asking them to send in their replies to him on or before 10th March; whether this circular letter was issued with his authority; if so, whether any general permission had been granted to adjutants of the Regular or Territorial Army to act as recruiting agencies for the organisation named; and, if the letter was issued without his authority, what disciplinary action will be taken in the matter?

Sir L. WORTHINGTON-EVANS

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative and to the second and third parts in the negative. With regard to the fourth part of the question, the letter was written under a misapprehension which has been corrected. It is not proposed to take any further action in the matter.

Mr. DALTON

Will general instructions be issued to those in responsible positions in order to prevent a repetition of this occurrence?

Sir L. WORTHINGTON-EVANS

General instructions have been issued, and that constitutes the misapprehension in this case because the instructions were not followed.
