§ 60. Mr. ROBERT YOUNGasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the pay of Income Tax collectors depends on results; if so, will he state on what basis these payments are made; and whether there is a definitely fixed minimum payment for such work?
§ Mr. McNEILLNo, Sir. The remuneration of collectors is determined by reference to the amount of work and of expense involved in each collection. Very many collections afford part-time employment only, and there is no recognised minimum remuneration.
§ Colonel DAYCan the right hon. Gentleman say whether the collectors have to pay their own office expenses?
§ Mr. McNEILLI think they do, but I would not like to say positively, without notice.
§ Mr. YOUNGIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that the inspector of taxes for Croydon stated in the Police Court that the collectors of taxes were paid by results?
§ Mr. McNEILLIf that statement is correct—I do not know whether it was made without qualification—I think it was a mistake.
§ Mr. McNEILLYes.
