HC Deb 16 March 1926 vol 193 c247
60. Mr. ROBERT YOUNG

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the pay of Income Tax collectors depends on results; if so, will he state on what basis these payments are made; and whether there is a definitely fixed minimum payment for such work?

Mr. McNEILL

No, Sir. The remuneration of collectors is determined by reference to the amount of work and of expense involved in each collection. Very many collections afford part-time employment only, and there is no recognised minimum remuneration.

Colonel DAY

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether the collectors have to pay their own office expenses?

Mr. McNEILL

I think they do, but I would not like to say positively, without notice.

Mr. YOUNG

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the inspector of taxes for Croydon stated in the Police Court that the collectors of taxes were paid by results?

Mr. McNEILL

If that statement is correct—I do not know whether it was made without qualification—I think it was a mistake.

Mr. YOUNG

Will the right hon. Gentleman enquire into it.

Mr. McNEILL

Yes.
