HC Deb 16 March 1926 vol 193 cc241-2
47. Sir H. CROFT

asked the Prime Minister whether he will consider proposals which will compel Government Departments and municipal authorities to purchase only British materials unless the materials required cannot be suitably produced in thin country?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Ronald McNeill)

I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to the answer on this subject given to my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for the Hallam Division on the 20th July last as regards Government Departments, a copy of which I am sending him. As regards municipal authorities, it would be undesirable to apply compulsion, but several circulars have already been issued to local authorities generally urging them to purchase British material in the absence of exceptional circumstances. My right hon. Friend the Minister of Health, is about to issue a further circular emphasising the importance of securing that where possible the materials and components of goods purchased shall also be British.

Sir H. CROFT

Bearing in mind the fact that municipalities are unable to borrow with the advantage of British credit, may I ask whether these facts were placed before them and whether that is not a. reason why they should be compelled to consider British contracts?

Mr. McNEILL

Every possible influence is being used to secure the ends which my hon. and gallant Friend has in view.
