37. Mr. SMITHfurther asked the President of the Board of Education if he is aware that the Thurgoland National School was closed for repairs and improvements from Christmas holidays to 2nd March, and no instruction was given to these children; that county minor scholarship scholars during this period had no facilities for instruction; and whether he can suggest alternative accommodation for scholars when schools are closed for such lengthy periods?
§ Lord E. PERCYThe question of the temporary provision of alternative accommodation in the circumstances described by the hon. Member is one for the consideration of the local authorities and school managers.
Mr. SMITHIs the Noble Lord not aware that there are quite a number of rural schools in the country where repairs have been undertaken which have involved the scholars in long holidays, and will he be prepared to consider the cost of contributing toward(r) the expenses of taking these children to other schools still open in their area?
§ Lord E. PERCYEach of these cases differs in circumstance. I am prepared to consider anything that the local authorities may propose to me.
