HC Deb 08 March 1926 vol 192 cc1920-1
83. Colonel DAY

asked the Home Secretary if he is aware that at the inquest on John Lincoln, executed at Shepton Mallet prison on the 2nd March, the Governor of the gaol protested against the presence of a journalist as a juryman; and on what grounds such objection was made and on whose authority?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

Yes, Sir. The Governor acted, in his own discretion, under a misapprehension as to the necessary procedure at the inquest.

Colonel DAY

Will the right hon. Gentleman take steps to see that mistakes like this by Governors are not made in future?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

I have stated that this was made by the Governor of the prison under a misapprehension. It is a very exceptional thing for Governors to act under a misapprehension.
