§ 6. Mr. ROBERT YOUNGasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what advantage there is to this country 494 in retaining the British Embassy in Constantinople while the seat of government of the Turkish Republic is at Angora; and whether there is any intention of removing the British Embassy to Angora?
§ Sir A. CHAMBERLAINThere is no present intention of abandoning the Embassy at Constantinople. The absence of accommodation and the general conditions of life at Angora make that at present impossible.
Captain CROOKSHANKWill the right hon. Gentleman say if it is not a fact that Turkey is the only country in the world to keep an Ambassador in a town which is not the caiptal?
§ Sir A. CHAMBERLAINI do not think the circumstances are exactly reproduced anywhere else, but, as I stated the other day, the Ambassador makes frequent visits to Angora, and I think the First Secretary of the Embassy will shortly proceed there.
§ Sir A. CHAMBERLAINI think before I answer a question of that kind I had better refresh my memory as to what has taken place.
§ Mr. KIRKWOODHas the right hon. Gentleman considered the advisability of sending to Angora one of Lord Weir's houses?
