HC Deb 13 April 1926 vol 194 cc12-3
20. Mr. SMITH

also asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will say of the railways now under construction or approved in Kenya how many miles pass through native reserves, land alienated to Europeans, game reserves, and other Crown lands, respectively?

Mr. AMERY

The approximate figures are: native reserves, 134 miles; land alienated to non-natives (mainly Europeans), 95 miles. No land in the other two categories appears to be concerned.

21. Mr. SMITH

further asked the Secretary of State if he will say of the existing railways in Kenya, how many miles pass through native reserves, land alienated to Europeans, game reserves, and other Crown lands, respectively?

Mr. AMERY

The following figures for the distances in question amount in the aggregate to more than the total mileage of existing railways in Kenya, as in many cases the railway is the boundary between lands of different classes: Native reserves, 272 miles; land alienated to non-natives (mainly Europeans), 683 miles; game reserve, 31 miles; other Crown land, 223 miles The figures are approximate only, but the main source of error is likely to be due to the fact that lands classed as "other Crown lands" may by now have been definitely assigned to natives.
