HC Deb 30 November 1925 vol 188 cc1811-2
39. Mr. JAMES HUDSON

asked the Postmaster-General whether, in the interests of temperance and of personal economy, he will discontinue the advertisements for the sale of cases of a dozen bottles of port wine at an inclusive charge of 99s. per case, which are now appearing in the ordinary books of stamps issued by the Post Office?

Major HENNESSY for

My hon. Friend does not see any sufficient grounds for discontinuing the advertisement in question, the effect of which the hon. Member has not accurately quoted.

Mr. HUDSON

Had the hon. Gentleman considered the appeal of the Prime Minister for personal economy, when he gave that answer regarding this highly poisonous and expensive material?

Viscountess ASTOR

Has not the hon. Gentleman considered that it is rather ridiculous to legislate against excessive drinking, while all the time you are making money out of advertising drink?

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Is this advertisement in line with the present campaign for buying Empire products? Why not Australian or South African wines?

Mr. BLUNDELL

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that port wine is universally considered a teetotal drink in Lancashire?
