HC Deb 25 November 1925 vol 188 cc1353-4
33. Mr. T. HENDERSON

asked the Minister of Labour the number of part-time managers of Employment Exchanges in Scotland and the extent of the area under the control of each manager?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

The number of branch offices in Scotland is 120. The areas covered vary very considerably, and it would take much time and labour to compile a table showing each of them in detail. If the hon. Member has any particular case in mind and will communicate with me I will see that such information as is available is sent to him.

Mr. HENDERSON

Will the right hon. Gentleman be able to give me the extent of the largest area?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

The largest type of area would be like Tain or Kingussie, which would be 700 or 800 square miles, but, of course, the advisability of having an exchange does not depend upon the largeness of the area but upon the number of cases.

Mr. HENDERSON

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that in the Tain area the manager who has control of the area made it necessary that the insured persons should travel a distance of 11 or 12 miles to obtain insurance benefit, although the Act says that they are only supposed to travel six or four miles?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

If the hon. Member will communicate with me, I will inquire.
