§ 5. Mr. MacKENZIE LIVINGSTONEasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can make any statement as to constitutional changes in Egypt; and when the Egyptian elections will be held?
Mr. CHAMBERLAINThe answer to both parts of the question is in the negative. I would remind the hon. Member that when the British Protectorate was withdrawn in 1922 His Majesty's Government made it plain that the creation of a Parliament with a right to control the policy and administration of a constitutionally responsible Government was a matter for the King of Egypt and the Egyptian people to determine. See Command Paper 1592 of 1922, page 29.
Captain BENNDid not the British Government take some part in framing that Constitution by the restrictions suggested?
Mr. CHAMBERLAINIf T am asked about events which took place when I was not Foreign Secretary, I should like to have notice of the question.
