§ 36. Sir W. SUGDENasked the President of the Board of Education what steps he is taking in industrial areas to encourage students, especially boy students from secondary schools, to proceed to the universities, as well as to ensure after the conclusion of their courses that employment be available for them should such students prefer to enter industry rather than any of the professions?
§ Lord E. PERCYThe Board encourage all secondary schools to develop sixth form work with a view, amongst other things, to meeting the needs of pupils who should proceed to the universities. They offer annually 200 State scholarships tenable at universities, and they recognise for grant expenditure incurred by local education authorities on assisting pupils to proceed to the universities. If the last part of the question refers to students leaving the university, arrangements for putting such students in touch with openings for industrial employment fall within the province of the university authorities rather than of the Board. The hon. Member is doubtless aware that most of the universities have appointments boards which assist students in this matter.
§ Sir W. SUGDENWill the right hon. Gentleman ascertain how many of the students passing through the northern universities are compelled to do unskilled labour, after receiving the training they have had?
§ Lord E. PERCYThe hon. Member doubtless knows that most of the universities have appointments boards.
