76. Mr. COUPER

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that certain local authorities in England have adopted the principle of direct labour in their housing schemes; if he can state how many have done so; and what proportion they represent in the various housing schemes in operation

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

Up to 1st March, 1925, 53 local authorities in England and Wales had commenced work by direct labour on schemes approved under the Housing Acts of 1923 and 1924. The total number of houses in these schemes is 4,531. The total number of houses included in contracts let by local authorities on the 1st March was 57,612.

Has the right hon. Gentleman made inquiries into the exceedingly remarkable experience of the Swansea Corporation in their scheme?
