asked the Minister of Health how many persons are at present confined in mental hospitals; and how many of these are maintained solely at the public expense?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

On the 1st January, 1925, there were 111,200 persons confined in institutions for the insane in England and Wales. 102,313 were maintained at the public expense, but in many of the rate-aided cases contributions are recovered from the relatives.
