HC Deb 29 June 1925 vol 185 c1991
29. Sir ROBERT HAMILTON

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether His Majesty has assented to the amendment of the Masters' and Servants' Ordinance, 1910, of Kenya, whereby a servant may be punished with rigorous imprisonment and/or fine up to 100s. for breach of a contract to work?

Mr. AMERY

The provision referred to is exactly repeated from the former Ordinance (now repealed) of 1918, except for the change from 50 rupees to 100s. consequent on the change of currency. The Acting Governor has been informed that His Majesty will not be advised to exercise his power of disallowance in respect of the new Ordinance.

Sir R. HAMILTON

Have any special circumstances arisen recently to cause this revision in the ordinance?

Mr. AMERY

No, Sir. In this respect the Ordinance has not been revised from the Ordinance of 1918. The alteration to which the hon. Member refers in the 1910 Ordinance was a part of the Ordinance of 1918, and the present Ordinance brings it up to date.
