HC Deb 24 June 1925 vol 185 c1527
68. Mr. HADEN GUEST

asked the Minister of Health whether, in view of the proposed removal of Bethlem Hospital from Southwark to a site outside London, he proposes to call a conference of those interested in the matter, with a view to the preservation of the site of Bethlem as a permanent open space?

Sir K. WOOD

Enquiries made by my right hon. Friend have not indicated that any useful purpose would be served by calling a conference, but further attempts will be made to see if this matter cannot be settled without pursuing the controversy which has arisen through a Parliamentary Committee.

Colonel DAY

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that a great deal of hardship will be suffered by the people of Southwark if this hospital is removed?

Sir K. WOOD

Yes, and that is one of the reasons why we are endeavouring to call a conference.

Colonel DAY

Can we know when a conference will be held?

Sir K. WOOD

It is being arranged, as the hon. and gallant Member, if he had listened to my reply, would have known.
