HC Deb 29 July 1925 vol 187 cc432-3
66. Sir PHILIP RICHARDSON

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his attention has been drawn to the excessive speed of motor omnibuses and commercial vehicles; and whether the police have instructions to see that the law as to speed is strictly observed in the case of such vehicles?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Sir William Joynson-Hicks)

Yes, Sir, and I would refer my hon. Friend to the recent return of prosecutions and convictions of drivers of motor vehicles for exceeding the speed limit, of which I am sending him a copy.

Sir P. RICHARDSON

Is the right hon. Baronet aware that there were no prosecutions in the outlying districts of Surrey in the case of omnibuses and public vehicles? Does that suggest that there were no offences against the speed regulations?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

No, Sir, that is not so. I thought my hon. Friend was referring to the Metropolitan district. The outlying districts of Surrey are, of course, under the Surrey Police. I will try to get the figures for my hon. Friend.

Mr. ERSKINE

Is the right hon. Baronet aware that racing of motor omnibuses in Pimlico is of daily occurrence, much to the danger of the public?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

I was not aware of that, but I will take special care that police shall be put on in the hon. Member's constituency.
