HC Deb 27 July 1925 vol 187 cc33-4
64. Captain FAIRFAX

asked the Home Secretary whether, in view of the treatment of British subjects at Ellis Island, he has considered, or will consider, the expediency of similarly treating subjects of the United States of America landing at British ports until such time as strictly mutual concessions lay down improved conditions for the nationals of both Governments?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

I have no recent information as to the conditions encountered by British immigrants at Ellis Island, but I do not think that retaliatory measures would be calculated to lead to their improvement, which I trust will come before long.

Captain FAIRFAX

May I ask if the right hon. Gentleman is satisfied with the conditions?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

No, I cannot say I am satisfied with the conditions, but I hope that improvement will come before long.
