§ 16. Mr. RUNCIMANasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the amount of direct taxation paid by the white population in Northern Rhodesia, Nyasaland, Tanganyika, Kenya, and Uganda?
§ Mr. ORMSBY-GOREIn Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland an Income Tax is imposed, the incidence of which is almost entirely upon Europeans. In Northern Rhodesia the estimated receipts for 1925-26 are £35,000 (of which approximately 90 per cent, will be paid by companies); and in Nyasaland £15,000.
In the Tanganyika Territory there is at present no Income Tax or direct taxation upon Europeans.
In Kenya the estimated receipts from the non-native Hut and Poll Tax in 1925 are £25,000. The sums collected from Europeans and other non-natives are not shown separately, but the Europeans numbered 9,651 out of a total non-native population of 45,633 in 1923.
In Uganda the estimated non-native Poll Tax receipts for 1925 are £7,170. The European population in 1923 was 1,289 out of 7,810 non-natives.

§ Mr. ORMSBY-GOREI will ask my right hon. Friend. If the matter is raised in Debate, I understand that I am to reply. The answer is a very complicated one. It deals with the question of the poll tax and other things, and there is a long statement dealing with two sets of figures.
