HC Deb 22 July 1925 vol 186 cc2177-8
10. Mr. FOOT MITCHELL

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he can now give the full composition of the Advisory Committee on the Application of the Boxer Indemnity and when it proposes to start its investigations?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The Chinese Indemnity Fund (Application) Act requires that the Advisory Committee shall consist of 11 members, of whom one must be a woman and at least two must be Chinese nationals. The following eight members have been appointed:

  • Earl Buxton (Chairman).
  • Dame Adelaide Anderson
  • Sir John Jordan.
  • Sir Charles Addis.
  • Sir Christopher Needham
  • Professor Soothill.
  • Sir William Clark, Comptroller-General of the Department of Overseas Trade.
  • Mr. S. P. Waterlow, of the Foreign Office.
I regret that my hon. Friend the Member for Dover (Major Astor) who had accepted an invitation to serve on the Committee, has found it necessary to resign owing to his absence in Australia. The Committee cannot begin its investigations until the three vacant seats which thus remain have been filled. For two out of the three I am anxious to secure the services of two Chinese nationals with high qualifications, and I greatly regret the delay in filling these appointments which the present disturbances in China have made inevitable.
