HC Deb 15 July 1925 vol 186 cc1281-2
63. Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the Minister of Health of he is aware of an agreement between a large landowner and the local colliery company which prevents any houses being erected in the Parish of Barnborough, near Doncaster; and if he will take steps to have this agreement broken and sufficient houses erected to meet the local demand?

Sir K. WOOD

My right hon. Friend is not aware of any such agreement as that to which the hon. Member refers. If the local authority consider it necessary to acquire land for housing purposes in this parish, and they are unable to do so by agreement, it is open to them to make an Order for compulsory purchase.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there are fewer houses fit for human habitation in this locality now than there were in 1914, and is he aware that this is due to the agreement I have referred to, and will he not suggest to the local authority that they have a duty to perform to the men who work at the local colliery by providing houses?

Sir K. WOOD

I am not aware of the effect of this agreement, but if there is any question of acquiring land the local authority have full power to do so.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Is he aware that the local authority will not carry out their powers, and will his Department suggest to them that they have a duty to perform in this respect?

Sir K. WOOD

No, Sir; I am net aware of it.
