HC Deb 13 July 1925 vol 186 c840
19. Colonel DAY

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department whether he is aware that bath-chair attendants, mostly ex-service men, employed at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley have found it impossible to pay the charge of 4s. per day for the bath chairs, and are asking that this charge should be reduced; and, in view of the hardship inflicted upon these men, who are obliged to pay this sum for the use of the same, irrespective of whether they do any business or not, will he suggest to the authorities that these charges be reduced?

Mr. SAMUEL

I am informed by the British Exhibition authorities that the bath-chair concessionaires have been considering a reduction in the daily charge made to attendants for the hire of bath chairs, and that the Exhibition authorities have at the request of the concessionaires agreed to a reduction from 4s. to 3s. 6d. as from to-day.

Colonel DAY

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that on many days these men earn nothing, and that 3s. 6d. a day, with their own expenses, is very heavy? Cannot a further reduction be made?
