Lieut. - Colonel Sir FREDERICK HALLasked the Under-Secretary of State, for India whether arrangements have been made recently for the affixing of a largo notice on the India Once Stores overlooking the River Thames; whether the notice in question is an advertisement; if so, will he state what rent" is received for its exhibition: whether it is to be displayed for a fixed period and, if so, for how long; whether the policy of using Government buildings for disfiguring advertisements has received the sanction of the Cabinet; and if he will state whether the Government propose 10 give the necessary facilities for the Advertisements Regulation Bill passing during the present Session?
§ Earl WINTERTONThe High Commissioner for India, acting as the agent of the Government of India has leased the advertisement rights on the river front of the India Store Depot for a period of five years from the 10th February, 1925, 836 at a rent of £525 per year. The latter part of the question should be addressed to the Home Office.
§ Sir W. DAVISONAre any precautions to be taken that the form of advertisements is approved, so that any eye-sore may not be created?
§ Earl WINTERTONAs the advertisement is already there I am afraid that the eye-sore is there and will stop.
§ Sir W. DAVISONI understood the Noble Lord to say that the contract for a period of five yeas. Surely some precaution will be taken as to the nature of the advertisement displays?
§ Earl WINTERTONif my hon. Friend wants details, perhaps he will put a question on the Paper. All I can say is that the advertisement is there, and that the High Commissioner for India, acting as the Agent of the Government of India, put it up.
