38. Mr. MACKINDER

asked the Home Secretary if his attention has been called to the frequency of accidents at Lever New Docks, Bromborough; and whether, in view of the fact that these docks are not covered by the Factory and Workshops Act, he will call for a report of all the accidents which have taken place at these docks?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

I have no power to require a report of the accidents occurring at these docks, which are in course of construction only, but the contractors have voluntarily supplied me with the information. It appears that since the work commenced or. 1st December, 1924, there have been 70 accidents, the number of persons employed being about 300. The great majority of these accidents were not of a serious character, and were due not to the working of machinery or other plant, but to simple manual operations such as handling of rails or timber, or through workmen slipping or knocking against some object.

Can the right hon. Gentleman tell us if there has been more than one accident of the nature referred to?

No, only one.
