HC Deb 03 August 1925 vol 187 cc955-9
Mr. ARTHUR HENDERSON

Will the Prime Minister tell us what is the business to be taken on Wednesday; and also the date on which the House is going to adjourn, and when it will be expected to resume after the Summer Recess?

The PRIME MINISTER

I am afraid that the statement is rather a long one. The business of the House for Monday and Tuesday was announced last week.

Wednesday, 5th August: Appropriation Rill: Second Reading.

Thursday, 8th August: Supplementary Estimate for the Mines Department in Committee.

Friday, 7th August: Report of the Supplementary Estimate for the Mines Department.

Appropriation Bill; remaining stages.

Saturday, 8th August: Motion for the Summer Adjournment, until Monday, 16th November.

To-morrow, after the conclusion of the Business of Supply, we shall consider the

Honours (Prevention of Abuses) Bill [Lords], Committee: National Library of Scotland Bill [Lords], Report and Third Reading.

It will be necessary, before the Adjournment, to consider the Lords Amendments, if any, to the following Bills which have already passed this House:

The Bills now before Parliament which will be postponed for consideration in the autumn are as follow:

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

What time will the House meet on Friday?

The PRIME MINISTER

At the usual time.

Mr. MACKINDER

Was it not the intention of the Government to rise on Friday under ordinary circumstances? Is there really any reason for the House sitting on Saturday?

The PRIME MINISTER

No one would be better pleased than I if it could be possible to bring our proceedings to an end on Friday, and I hope very much that communications may take place on that subject through the usual channels. It it could be arranged, it would meet the convenience of the House, and would, I am sure, be to everyone's advantage.

Sir GRATTAN DOYLE

What does the right hon. Gentleman mean by the "usual time" on Friday—11 o'clock or 2.45?

The PRIME MINISTER

Eleven o'clock is the usual time on Friday.

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Would it be possible to arrange to take the Report stage of the Coal Mines Vote after the Appropriation Bill on Friday? I understand that when the Appropriation Bill is discussed on Friday there is likely to be some conversation of the subject of public expenditure. Would it be possible to take that before the Report stage of the Coal Mines Resolution?

The PRIME MINISTER

I am afraid the Report stage must be taken, but I hope very much, in view of the fact that we shall have had the whole of Thursday, that the Report stage may be taken, as the Report stage very often is, as a formal matter.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Is it proposed to rise at 4 o'clock on Friday, or do we go right on?

The PRIME MINISTER

That, of course, is a matter of arrangement. If it were possible to conclude on Friday, no doubt an arrangement could be made with the consent of the House.

Mr. MAXTON

Having regard to the very serious state of affairs in the country with reference to industrial troubles and unemployment, and in view of the Prime Minister's announcement as to the length of the Recess, would the House be reassembled in the event of the troubles becoming more serious in the interim?

The PRIME MINISTER

There is always power to call the House together.

Mr. MAXTON

Would the right hon. Gentleman give us an assurance that, in the event of any serious trouble arising, the House would be summoned?

The PRIME MINISTER

I cannot imagine that such an assurance is necessary. I have no hesitation in giving it.

Motion made, and Question put, That this day, notwithstanding anything in Standing Order No. 15, Supplementary Estimates for New Services may be considered in. Committee of Supply, and that Business other than the Business of Supply may be taken before Eleven of the Clock."— [The Prime Minister.]
